Tape Drives & Libraries (LTO/DLT/DAT)

The generation label on the bezel is the entire decision — Ultrium 6/7/8/9 is a $200–5,000 working asset; DLT, DDS, AIT or Travan is $20 of metal and plastic.

How to spot it

LTO drives are 5.25 in half-height (146 × 82 × 205 mm) or full-height with a rectangular slot-load door, an LED or LCD status panel, and a rear SFF-8482/8644 SAS, LC fibre-channel or VHDCI SCSI connector; the bezel is marked Ultrium with a generation number. Library-sled drives sit in a metal carrier with a blind-mate connector. Libraries are 1U–5U chassis with a barcode-reader robot, removable magazines and a management LCD. DLT uses a single-reel cartridge with a take-up leader; DDS is 4 mm helical-scan with a visible drum.

Metal content

MetalQuantityNotes
Gold0.05–0.20 g per LTO drive ≈ 0.03 g/lbSAS/FC fingers, controller ENIG and head flex pads. Estimated from board area, no published assay
Copper~10 g/lbMotors and harness; drive PCB grades mid-to-high at $2.50–5/lb
Base metal0.7–1.8 kg aluminium per full-height driveThe head is thin-film NiFe on AlTiC ceramic — sub-milligram, no PM

At 4 Aug 2026 spot prices that works out to $4.02 per pound of contained metal — Gold 0.03 g = $3.92, Copper 10 g = $0.11. A refiner paying $2 returns about 50% of that, which is normal: refining costs money and the buyer takes a margin.

Safe removal

Working temperature: No heat; sticky-shed tape baking 50–55 °C, never above 60 °C

Nothing to remove — read the drive's error and usage log first. An ITDT or HP L&TT scan takes five minutes and turns an untested $200 drive into a verified healthy, 400-hour $450 drive. If genuinely scrapping: 4–6 chassis screws, lift the main PCB (one ZIF flex to the head, one power connector), and split the aluminium chassis with a T10/T15. Do not disassemble the head/tape-path module — it is the only reason the drive has value.

Hazards

🔥 Lithium battery fire

A standard ABC extinguisher will NOT stop a runaway lithium cell. Don't count on one.

🧲 Neodymium magnets

Don't let two magnet plates snap together across your fingers.

🪚 Fibreglass and board dust

NEVER dry-cut boards indoors without extraction.

Before you scrap it

100–400×, among the most extreme ratios in e-waste. LTO-8: $1,300–2,800 working versus ~$8 scrap; LTO-6: $200–500 versus $6. Even a failed LTO-7 sells $80–200 as a parts unit, and selling tested with a log dump adds 60–120%. Sell libraries complete with magazines, both PSUs and rails — a complete unit is worth 2–3× its stripped parts.

The common trap

Tape drives are precision instruments, so they must be full of gold. They are full of aluminium — the precision is a ceramic head and a servo loop, neither with recoverable metal. A stripped LTO-8 that resells for $1,300–2,800 yields under $10 at a refiner. Second trap: treating used media as worthless — a pallet of old backup tapes from a decommissioned datacentre is frequently $5,000–40,000 of resaleable LTO-7/8/9 after certified erase. Third: scrapping the library while keeping the drives; the robot, magazines and controller are the hard-to-find parts.

Questions

How much gold is in tape drives & libraries (lto/dlt/dat)?

Gold: 0.05–0.20 g per LTO drive ≈ 0.03 g/lb. Copper: ~10 g/lb. At current spot that is about $4.02 of contained metal per pound.

How do you identify tape drives & libraries (lto/dlt/dat)?

The generation label on the bezel is the entire decision — Ultrium 6/7/8/9 is a $200–5,000 working asset; DLT, DDS, AIT or Travan is $20 of metal and plastic.

How do you remove tape drives & libraries (lto/dlt/dat) safely?

Nothing to remove — read the drive's error and usage log first. An ITDT or HP L&TT scan takes five minutes and turns an untested $200 drive into a verified healthy, 400-hour $450 drive. If genuinely scrapping: 4–6 chassis screws, lift the main PCB (one ZIF flex to the head, one power connector), and split the aluminium chassis with a T10/T15. Do not disassemble the head/tape-path module — it is the only reason the drive has value.

Is tape drives & libraries (lto/dlt/dat) worth more working than as scrap?

100–400×, among the most extreme ratios in e-waste. LTO-8: $1,300–2,800 working versus ~$8 scrap; LTO-6: $200–500 versus $6.
