Should you scrap it or sell it working?

Most people lose more money to this one decision than to every refining inefficiency combined. A graphics card worth twelve dollars as scrap can be worth three hundred tested. The rule that settles it is short.

The rule

If it has a model number someone searches for, test it. If it is a lump of substrate, scrap it.

That is genuinely most of the answer. The exceptions are worth knowing, but if you apply nothing else you will capture most of the value.

Where scrapping loses catastrophically

These are ranked by how badly the decision goes wrong.

  1. Graphics cards. Scrap value runs about $4–8 per pound, so a two-pound card is roughly twelve dollars. A working RTX 3080 was trading around $325 in mid-2026. Even a dead-common budget card beats its scrap weight by thirty times. Never scrap a card that posts.
  2. Hybrid and EV traction inverters. Broken up for copper and aluminium you get $40–110. Sold as a core, $250–1,500. This is the largest single gap in the whole trade.
  3. Modern processors. Scrap is about fifty cents a chip. Tested, a desktop i5 or i7 is $15–80 and a Ryzen is $60–250. A bulk lot of 655 untested i3s once sold for 84 cents each; the same chips tested individually go for $8–25. Testing is the entire margin.
  4. Engine control modules and vehicle electronics. An ECU is about two dollars of scrap and $40–900 as a rebuildable core. Instrument clusters, ABS modules, transmission modules and xenon ballasts all follow the same pattern at 20–200 times scrap.
  5. Vintage processors and chips. A Pentium Pro is about sixteen dollars as scrap and $65–300 as a collectible. Ceramic packages from the 1970s and 80s — early Intel, MOS, Motorola, military-grade parts — routinely beat their metal by orders of magnitude.
  6. Fibre transceivers. Roughly 25 cents as scrap, $5–60 each working.
  7. Vacuum tubes. The worst trap on the list. A Telefunken, Mullard or Western Electric tube can be worth $50–500 while its metal content is worth cents.

Where scrapping is genuinely right

Note that ceramic packages are the one family where scrap value genuinely competes with resale — and that is only because gold is near $4,000 an ounce.

The five-minute test that pays for itself

Before anything goes in a scrap bucket, do this:

  1. Read the part number and search it with the word "sold" or on a completed-listings filter. You are looking for what people actually paid, not what sellers are asking.
  2. Check whether it powers on. Even a partial test — a card that displays, a drive that spins up with clean SMART, a module that identifies — moves it from scrap to used.
  3. Weigh the shipping. A fifty-dollar part that costs twenty to ship is a different proposition from one that fits in an envelope. Xenon ballasts and transceivers win here; motherboards often do not.
  4. Check for a core programme. Automotive electronics, industrial modules and hybrid components often have dedicated remanufacturers who publish buy prices for cores, including dead ones.

The sorting premium is separate, and larger than people expect

Even material you have correctly decided to scrap is worth sorting. Gold-edge memory pays about $50 a pound; the same sticks with heat spreaders still attached pay $18. Expansion cards pay $8.50 a pound clean and $2.30 with an oversize cooler on them. Mixed memory can pay negative — you pay a sorting fee.

Ten minutes with a screwdriver is frequently a three-fold move on the same physical material.

The honest counterweight

Selling working parts costs time. Listing, photographing, answering questions, packing, dealing with returns and chargebacks — that is real labour, and at low unit values it can lose to simply weighing material in. The gap has to be large enough to pay for the hassle.

A practical threshold: if the resale is under about five times the scrap value and the item is heavy or awkward to ship, weigh it in. Above that, or for anything light and searchable, list it.

Is it worth scrapping a graphics card?

Almost never. Scrap value is roughly $4–8 per pound, so a typical card is about twelve dollars, while a working card of the same generation commonly sells for ten to thirty times that. If it posts, sell it.

Are old CPUs worth more than new ones as scrap?

Yes, dramatically. Ceramic gold-lidded processors from the 1980s and early 90s pay $125–350 per pound, while modern lidded processors pay about $12 per pound — because the modern ones are mostly nickel-plated copper.

How do I know if a part has resale value?

Search the exact part number against completed or sold listings rather than active ones. If several have sold recently above the scrap value plus your shipping cost, list it.
