How to spot it

3.5″: 101 × 25 × 146 mm, 34-pin card edge or laptop flex, marked Teac FD-235, Sony MPF920, Mitsumi D359, ALPS. 5.25″: half-height Teac FD-55, Panasonic JU-475; full-height Tandon TM100 and Shugart in IBM PCs and industrial gear. Belt-drive 5.25″ units are the oldest. Found in retro PCs, industrial CNC and embroidery machines, samplers and test instruments.

Four side screws free the drive; two or four more free the board. Pull the stepper and spindle motors for the motor bucket, board to low-grade, chassis to steel. Keep working Teac/Sony 3.5″ and any 5.25″ intact and untested-listed at worst.
