Laptop Power Adapters

Read the label before the mallet — a genuine OEM brand and wattage combo (Dell 130 W, Lenovo slim-tip 230 W, Apple MagSafe, 100 W USB-C) is a $10–60 resale; a no-name brick is wire and ferrite.

How to spot it

Barrel-tip bricks (Dell, HP, Toshiba), rectangular-tip Lenovo, Apple MagSafe 1/2 and USB-C, Surface magnetic-tip, and big 230–330 W gaming bricks. Genuine units carry dense regulatory labels with serials; counterfeits (common on Apple) have vague labels, light weight and glossy shells.

Metal content

MetalQuantityNotes
Copper60–90 g/lbBoth cables plus the transformer, chokes and heavy board traces — a 90 W brick with cords is roughly 15% copper

At 4 Aug 2026 spot prices that works out to $0.80 per lb of contained metal — Copper 75 g = $0.80. A refiner paying $0.4 per lb returns about 50% of that, which is normal: refining costs money and the buyer takes a margin.

Safe removal

Working temperature: No heat needed — mechanical teardown only

Resale path needs no teardown — test at the jack with a multimeter, bundle with the AC cord. Scrap path: spine in a vise or a firm mallet tap on the seam splits welded shells; cables to ICW, board to low-grade after discharging the bulk capacitor across a resistor — mains-side caps in these hold a real bite for days.

Hazards

⚡ Stored high voltage

NEVER short a large capacitor with a screwdriver. It welds the tip, blasts molten metal at your face, and can rupture the can.

☠ Lead — dust more than fume

NEVER dry sweep or use compressed air on a scrapping bench. HEPA-vac or wet-wipe only.

🧪 PVC and plastics

NEVER burn card plastic or cable jacket.

Before you scrap it

The main play: MagSafe/USB-C Apple $15–40, 100 W+ USB-C GaN $15–35, Dell/Lenovo/HP standard tips $8–20, gaming bricks $25–60, Surface $15–40. Cut-cord and no-name units go straight to the copper math.

The common trap

Two. Scrapping high-wattage OEM bricks — gaming-laptop 230–330 W supplies sell $25–60 all day and Apple chargers hold value even used. And reselling counterfeits: a fake MagSafe is a fire liability with no serial — if the label looks thin, scrap it regardless of what it claims to be.
