How to spot it

Two families. Cable docks: ThinkPad Thunderbolt/USB-C, Dell WD/TB series, HP G2–G5, CalDigit, Anker — one cable to the laptop, port wall on the back. Mechanical docks: ThinkPad Ultra/Pro/Basic, Dell E-Port, HP UltraSlim — spring-loaded gold contact block that mates with pads under the laptop. The dock's power brick is often 135–230 W and has its own value.

Resale path first: test power-through and one display out, bundle with the correct brick. Strip path: four to eight base screws under rubber feet, board out whole to mid-grade — the docking connector block and port stacks are the dense part. Steel plate to steel, shell to plastic.

Before you scrap it

Thunderbolt 3 docks $30–60, TB4/USB4 $60–150, OEM USB-C docks $25–70, mechanical ThinkPad/Dell docks $10–30 with the brick. Enterprise IT refreshes dump these by the pallet — the arbitrage is picking the cable docks out of the pile.

The common trap

Docks ship with high-wattage bricks, and the pair splits wrong in scrap streams — a TB4 dock plus its 230 W brick is $100+ together and routinely gets scrapped as two low-value orphans. Keep dock and brick married. Missing lock keys and worn logos barely dent the price.
