NEVER grind, sand, file, saw, drill, abrasive-cut, sandblast, hammer, crush, shred, torch, melt or incinerate anything that might contain BeO. Sell or dispose of suspect parts intact. Broken beryllium parts are worth nothing; your lungs are worth everything.

Working coded Cisco/Juniper modules sell for $5–60 each versus about 25 cents as scrap. Never scrap these without checking the part number. Never look into a fibre or transceiver port — telecom lasers are invisible and can damage the retina. Bare fibre shards are near-invisible splinters that don't show on X-ray.

The common trap

An "optical connector" and an "optical transceiver" are completely different things for scrap purposes. Only the transceiver electronics have value.
