How to spot it

Line cards are 30–45 cm with a front port bank, ejector levers at both ends and a dense two-row gold-pin backplane connector at the rear; supervisors carry a console port, a CF/USB slot and the largest heatsink. Optics: SFP (one bail latch, LC duplex or RJ45), SFP+/SFP28, QSFP+/QSFP28 (wider, MPO or four-lane LC), each laser-etched with a Cisco or Juniper part number and a side barcode. Price the model number on the pull-tab before deciding anything.

At 4 Aug 2026 spot prices that works out to $10.5 per pound of contained metal — Gold 0.075 g = $9.79, Copper 70 g = $0.75. A refiner paying $5.5 returns about 52% of that, which is normal: refining costs money and the buyer takes a margin.

Safe removal

Working temperature: No heat; mechanical strip only

Optics come out by squeezing the bail or pulling the tab — never yank the fibre. Line cards: loosen the captive screws then operate both ejector levers simultaneously, because a card removed one-lever-first can crack at the connector. For scrap, strip boards from the chassis with a T15/T20 and 7 mm hex, cut the backplane free, and keep PSU copper and aluminium heatsinks separate.

🔆 Invisible laser radiation

NEVER look into a fibre end, a transceiver port or a patch panel port.

🔥 Lithium battery fire

A standard ABC extinguisher will NOT stop a runaway lithium cell. Don't count on one.

⚡ Stored high voltage

NEVER short a large capacitor with a screwdriver. It welds the tip, blasts molten metal at your face, and can rupture the can.

💣 Electrolytic capacitor rupture

Don't heat a capacitor directly with hot air at close range.

Before you scrap it

The decision rule is generational and the cliff is sharp — anything still on a vendor support matrix resells at 20–100× scrap, anything past End-of-Support collapses to near-scrap. Check the EoL/EoS date first; that one lookup decides it. Complete units with both PSUs, fan trays and rails sell 2–3× a bare chassis, and tested-with-a-boot-log adds 30–50%. Harvest in order: optics, PSUs and fan trays, supervisors and line cards, memory, then scrap the frame.

The common trap

Cisco = gold-loaded. True of the Catalyst 5000/6000 era; modern gear is RoHS lead-free with thin ENIG or immersion tin, denser ICs and far less gold per pound — a 2020s Nexus card is not meaningfully richer than a good server board. The expensive trap is scrapping current-generation gear at $4/lb: a Catalyst 9300-48P weighs ~11 lb, scraps for ~$35 and resells for $700–2,500. Also, a large fraction of secondary-market Cisco SFPs are recoded third-party parts.
